Paul A. Siedenburg
October 13, 2011
Paul was born October 17, 1924 in Savanna, Illinois, the third son of William H. and Ida M. Siedenburg. He passed away October 13, 2011 at home.
Paul accepted Christ into his life at an early age in Savanna, Illinois, establishing a faith that would impact the direction he would take throughout life. A member of The Gideons International and a long-time member of First Federated Church, Paul believed that unless you have the faith of a small child, you will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven.
Following graduation from Savanna High School he enrolled in Huntington College, Huntington, Indiana. It was 1942, World War II was on and when the U.S. Army Air Corps offered him the opportunity to enter the Pilot Aviation Cadet Program, he jumped at the chance because he had always wanted to fly. After ten months, three months past his nineteenth birthday, he graduated with his 2nd Lt. Commission and his Silver Wings. He was sent directly to Flight Instructors School at Randolph Field, San Antonio, Texas. Three months later he was sent to Independence Army Airfield, Independence, Kansas where he instructed Aviation Cadets for eleven months. He was sent to Aircraft Commanders School for Martin Marauder B-26 twin engine bombers and from there to Aircraft Commanders School for B-24 four engine bomber training. The war ended as he completed that course and he was discharged shortly after but remained an active member of the U.S. Air Force Reserve for twenty eight years retiring as a Lt. Colonel.
He joined the Iowa Farm Bureau Insurance Companies in 1949 and began his climb up the organizational ladder.
In 1954, he married Virginia M. Bruhn in Cedar Falls, Iowa and three children were born to this union: Douglas, David and Connie. Paul and Virginia made their home in Des Moines in 1956. In 1969 Virginia died after a long illness.
In 1970, he was appointed Vice President-Marketing for the Company's multistate operation and held that position until his retirement in 1985. During that time he did extensive speaking to groups in the insurance industry and served on the Life Insurance Marketing Research Association’s, (LIMRA), Board of Directors. In recognition of his success with his company and his work in the industry he was inducted into the Iowa Insurance Hall of Fame in 2007.
On January 29, 1997, Paul married Minnette M. Marmon, adding to his family her four children, Bradley, Linnette, Angela and Ricky.
Over the years, he was able to utilize his flying abilities by flying company planes to his many meetings and charter flying after retirement. During the sixty four years between 1943 and 2007, he amassed eight thousand hours of pilot time in thirty different types of aircraft without an accident. As a result, the Federal Aviation Agency awarded him the prestigious award of Master Pilot in 2009. He never thought he was the best pilot but always wanted to be one of the safest.
His primary purpose in life, however, was to raise his three children to love God, be successful parents and good citizens and to teach their children to do the same.
Left to cherish Paul's memory are his wife, Minnette; children Douglas (Julie), David (Dina), and Connie (Allan) Voorhees; seven grandchildren: Joel, Daniel, Ryan, Rachel, Eric, Jordan, and Taylor; Minnette's children; Bradley Norman (Paula), Linnette Lee, Angela Lia (Chris), Ricky Jay (Kim) and grandchildren: Michael, Dusty, Brent, Margarite, Nicholas, Nathan, Moriah, Kaylie and Koby. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Virginia and brothers Loyal and Alvin. He is survived by his brother, George of Savanna, IL and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway, West Des Moines. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at First Federated Church, 4801 Franklin Avenue, Des Moines with burial at Greenwood Cemetery in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be directed to Gideons International or Iowa Health Home Hospice.

To Minnette and the families of Paul Siedenburg:
So sorry to hear of your loss. Ron would have liked to have been
here to tell you that, but since he can't we'll send our sincere
sympathy to all of you. We know these days will be hard to go
through....just remember...."love's last gift is memories"
and we hope yours are a comfort to you now. I remember well the trip
we made together to Pella, eating in that quaint little coffee shop,
enjoying each other's company. We appreciated your friendship... Lois

Although I don't know Mr. Siedenburg personally, I send my condolences to his family. May you find comfort in the words of our Lord Jesus in John 5:28,29, "Do not marvel at this, because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out.....to a resurrection of life."

We have all lost a TRUE friend. Paul was one of the easiest people to work with, because you always knew you would be treated honestly and with a sense of fairness. He was always willing and able to help and support others. Kathleen and I will truly miss our friend Paul.

My parents, Hugh and Marion Croft were close to Paul during
his time in Cedar Falls and his continued career with Farm Bur-
eau Insurnance. My dad was the general agent for Black Hawk Co from
1952 til 1961 when he became general agent for Kossuth Co. and
moved to Estherville. Both my parents were very fond of Paul and
his first wife Virginia. My parents are both deceased but I am
honored to convey our family's sympathy to Minnette and the
entire family. May God's comfort be with you all.

My husband, Marvin Van Syoc passed away last year and immediately Paul called me on the phone with a supportive message. Paul flew down to Mt. Pleasant more than once and always contacted us. He was very good to us over the years , not only in connection with Farm Bureau but years after retirement for both of them. It always meant a lot to Marvin when Paul called. My sympathy to his wife and children. May you allow God to be your source of comfort as you complete your journey here and go on to be reunitd again with Paul. My prayers are with you. Jean Van Syoc

I got the privilege to get to know Paul when I was asked to provide an insurance-required aircraft checkout to him. Paul had recently purchased a partnership in a Beech Bonanza with his friend Bob Fisher. The checkout could have merely been a formality with Paul's experience, but Paul made it clear that safety was first, any criticism would be appreciated, and we could take as much time as needed for the checkout. I will always admire Pauls commitment to safety and will continue to use it as a model in my flying.
Paul quickly became a friend to me and my family, and I came to appreciate his faith, love of family, and enthusiasm for aviation. Paul took the time to come see us on a regular basis, even attending our son's baptism. I was honored to be at the ceremony where Paul received his well-deserved Master Pilot Award from the FAA. The award could not have gone to a more safety-conscious aviator. As a pilot and a gentleman Paul was a class act.
I was honored to accompany Paul and his son on Paul's last flight to his home town. Paul's eyes sparked when he commanded our flight as only an experienced, dedicated aviator can; and when he brought us to the places that were landmarks in the stories of his youth.
I will never forget Paul and the things he taught me both in and out of the airplane. He will be very missed at the Pella Airport.

I will be in Virginia this week, visiting my ailing brother, so I won't be with you to celebrate Paul's incredible life. I'm sad I can't tell the family in person just how much I admire Paul. He set a standard for living unmatched by the vast majority of people. He is truly one of the finest people I have known. I know his reward in heaven will be great.

I knew Paul through our shared passion for flying. I was fortunate to get to know him when I purchased the last airplane he owned, a beautiful 1963 Beech Bonanza. Paul was a true gentleman and I got to visit with him several times at the Pella airport, where the plane was hangared. He will be missed. TNZ
