Service Details

Roy Porter, Jr. went home to be with his Saviour, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, May 22, 2007. Funeral services will be at 10am Friday, May 25, 2007 at First Federated Church with burial to follow at Chapel Hill Cemetery.
Roy was born February 21, 1925 in Creston, Iowa, the son of Roy and Zilpha (Brown) Porter. He graduated from Shannon City High School in 1943. Roy proudly served his country from July 27, 1943 to March 30, 1946 as a Lance Corporal 6th Division Marine Corps “China Marine.” He served in multiple combat operations in the Pacific including the Solomon Islands, Marshall Islands, Guam, Okinawa and mainland China. Roy was the mayor of Clive from 1970-1978, and was the President of the Polk County Crime Commission from 1973-1974. For many years he served on the Board of Directors for Des Moines Christian School and Valley View Village. Roy was Pastor Emeritus of Missions at First Federated Church after serving as Missions Director for numerous years. He also worked very closely with the Vietnamese Evangelical Church for whom he had a deep love.
Roy is survived by his loving wife, Rhonda Maddex Porter of Clive; son, James (Janet) Porter of Las Vegas, Nevada; daughter, Sue (Mike) Farho of Africa; son, John Porter of Des Moines; grandsons, Jason (Christina) Porter, Jay Ryan Porter, Joe Porter, James D. Porter, all of Las Vegas, Nevada, John Farho of Omaha and Joshua Farho of Africa; brother, William Daniel (June) Porter of Indiana; sisters, Mary (John) Baker and Donna Roganholt, both of Wisconsin; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Chapman Porter; brother, Floyd Porter and sister, Fern Whittlesey.
The family will greet friends from 5:30-8pm Thursday at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway. Memorial contributions may be made to First Federated Missions or the City of Clive/Greenbelt Development.
