Norma Jean Thorpe

Norma Jean Thorpe passed from this life to peaceful rest on Saturday, April 14, 2012, at Bright Kavanagh House. She was born Norma Jean Morrison on July 6, 1925, in Deep River, Iowa, to George and Ethel Morrison.

On November 4, 1945, she married Lyle V. Thorpe in Brooklyn, Iowa and shortly after they moved to Des Moines. Norma worked many years for Des Moines Public Schools in food service at May Goodrell, Tech High, and Hoyt Middle School. After retiring, she worked part time at Gordman’s and also found time to volunteer at Mercy Hospital.

Norma is survived by sons, Craig (Julie) Thorpe and Tracy (Sandy) Thorpe, both of Des Moines; grandson, Jaime Thorpe; and great-grandchildren, Connor and Logan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle Thorpe; son, Terry (at birth); brothers, Melvin and Shorty Morrison; and sisters, Doris Madison and Opal Candler.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, at the Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery in Brooklyn, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street.

Memorial contributions may be directed Disabled Veterans Association, Hospice of Central Iowa or Animal Rescue League.
