William Wengert

William “Bill” Wengert, Jr., 87, passed away on Saturday, April 28, 2012, at the Carlisle Care Center.

Bill was born July 3, 1924, in Polk County, Iowa, the son of William A. and Lena (Rusher) Wengert, Sr. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Bill married Mary Jane Wheatley on February 22, 1958, in Des Moines.

Bill worked for John Deere in Ankeny for 31 years, where he served as shop Union Steward for the last six years. After retiring, Bill worked at various jobs until he began delivering for Meals on Wheels and meals to individuals in need, a passion he continued for 20 years.

Bill is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Wengert; daughter, Linda Heathcote of Phoenix, AZ; son, Dave Wengert of Liberty, MO; step-son, Ed Wheatley of Plattsmouth, NE; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Betty; and his step-son, Don Wheatley.

Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 8, 2012, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, followed by burial at Glendale Cemetery.
