Dorothy Griggs

Dorothy Griggs, 94, passed away Monday, September 9, 2013 at the Golden Living Center-Dunwoody in Atlanta, GA.

Dorothy was born February 4, 1919 in Grinnell, IA to Nelson Hudson and Ruby Buckner. Dorothy loved and was honored to serve as a Deaconess at Kyles A.M.E. Zion Temple. She worked for over 25 years in child care services, beginning at the old Jewish Community Center, Wesley United Methodist Church, and ending as a self-employed in-home childcare provider. Many of the children she cared for came to know her as “Grandma” and she loved them all dearly. Before moving to Georgia, she was a volunteer Grandparent at Oak Park Elementary through Polk County United Way. Dorothy was recognized and honored with the United Way Hero Award in 2008.

Friends and family always found good food, great fun and a welcoming spirit by Dorothy. She absolutely loved making sure everyone she loved and cared for had their needs met.

Her children know that she is with the Lord and she is hearing the words of one of her favorite hymns, “He’ll Understand and Say Well Done”.

Dorothy is survived by her son, Richard L. Dabner (Mary) of Knoxville, TN; daughter, Colleen J. Rumley of Austin, TX; daughter, Linda C. Stanley (Harry) of Des Moines, IA; son, Jack H. Hart of Phoenix, AZ; daughter, Kimberly A. Griggs-Murray of Atlanta, GA; 22 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Glenn H. Griggs; and son, Phillip E. Dabner.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m,. Monday, September 16, 2013, at Kyles AME Zion Church, 907 15th Street in Des Moines, with Pastor Multon presiding. Viewing will take place for an hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at Glendale Cemetery.
