Service Details
John Franklin, 81, was born July 9, 1933, to Raleigh and Nellie Franklin in Des Moines, Iowa. He passed away at Taylor House Hospice on September 6, 2014.
John served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. He retired from John Deere after 32 years of service and enjoyed camping, fishing, and playing guitar with his brothers.
John is survived by his children, Ronnie Dunagan and Kristi Dyer; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; as well as a host of extended family and beloved friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patti Sue; son, Johnny Franklin II, and daughter, Dianne Dunagan Kuntson.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m., with visitation beginning at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, September 11, 2014, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines, with burial to follow at Berwick Cemetery.

The other day, I got the startling news that my Great Grandpa Dave had passed away. When I was told this news, I didn't know what to feel or how to react. Over the past few years, I had thought to myself on more than one occasion, about how he was doing or if he was still alive, but had never gotten around to asking about him. Sitting here now, I obviously feel guilt, for not getting to see him often, but also a deep sadness I didn't think I would feel for someone who I didn't know as well as the rest of my family did. Today, after hearing so many hilarious, sweet, and kind stories about both my grandpa Dave and my grandma Pat, all I can say is that, I'm sorry I didn't get the chance to know you better, and although I didn't, that's okay, because I get to see the impact you both made on my family every day. R.I.P grandpa Dave, and if I end up being half as amazing and kind as both you and grandma Pat, then I will consider myself dang lucky!
