Service Details

Helen D. Mehl, 80, was born December 1, 1933, to William A. Harmon and Zella Cozette Collins in Pontiac, Michigan. She passed away at home and entered into eternal life on September 24, 2014, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Donna graduated from high school in Baxter Springs, KS in 1951. In 1961, she moved to Tulsa, OK where she met her soul mate, Paul E. Mehl Sr. They were married in 1964 and moved to the Southside of Des Moines in 1970 where they resided for 40 years. Donna relocated to Ankeny to be closer to family.

Donna retired from the Weitz Company in 2002 after 19 years of dedicated service. She was a loving wife, mother, and daughter, and acted as caregiver to her husband and mother. Donna loved animals, especially cats and dogs, science fiction, crocheting doilies, painting, and writing poems, some of which were published. She would challenge anyone to a game of Scrabble and was quick to let them know she was undefeated.

Donna is survived by her sister, Vee Harmon of Chouteau, OK; daughters, Tracie (Hollie) Price of Saylor Township, and Bonnie (Doug) Staas of Longwood, FL; sons, Paul (Marilyn) Mehl Jr. of Long Beach, CA, and Keith (Carolyn) Mehl of Des Moines; grandchildren, Brian Mehl, Shawnna (Rick) Freeze, Wendy (Donald) Kennedy, Angi (Michael) Frye, Stephen (Jessica) Waldron, Brian Price, Natasha Cruz, Alan Hall, Melody Edwards, Dylan Hall, and Allison Sloan; 18 great-grandchildren; as well as 4 nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and great-grandson, Damian Kennedy.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 4, 2014, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines, with a memorial service to begin at 12:00 p.m.
