Virginia Maureen (Hoit) Blackford-Sullivan was born June 18, 1924 in Marengo, Iowa, the daughter of Morra and Jessie (Smith) Hoit. She married her first husband, Willard Francis Smith in 1940 in Kansas City, KS. Virginia and her second husband, Raymond Verle Blackford, met in 1953 and were together many years before they married in 1986. Raymond was a veteran of the Army. They resided in Anaheim, CA for a time before they moved further north and owned and operated three dress shops called Blackford’s Ladieswear in Los Altos and Menlo Park. On November 21, 1994 in Reno, NV, she married her third husband, William Henry Sullivan, who was a Navy veteran.

Virginia had a love of horses as she was raised on a farm. She was very artistically talented. She could spend many hours concentrating on one drawing and completed many pictures in her lifetime.

Virginia passed away Friday, September 26, 2014 at the Baxter Care Center in Baxter, Iowa at the age of 90.

She had no children of her own and was cared for in her final years by her niece Judy and husband Frank Rains. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews throughout the country: Linda Pepper of Mesa, AZ, Pam Reed of Des Moines, IA, Rhonda Pecenka of Boone, IA, Janet Blackford Preminger of Runnells, IA, and many Blackford nieces and nephews from the Cedar Rapids area.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, her three husbands, and her brother, Farrell Dean Hoit.

According to Virginia’s wishes, cremation has occurred and there will be no services held.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association in memory of Virginia.
