Harvey Hansen
December 20, 2014
Harvey Hansen passed peacefully away Saturday morning, December 20, 2014 at Kavanagh Hospice House on 56th in Des Moines. Harvey was born on July 30, 1926 to Siegfried and Cecelia Hansen in Woodstock, Minnesota.
Harvey served in the U.S. Army during WW II. He observed the signing of the Peace Treaty in Tokyo Bay Japan. In 1947, Harvey married Ruby Mae Dickey. The couple farmed until 1955, when they relocated to Detroit, Michigan and he took a job as a heavy equipment operator. In 1957, they moved to Des Moines where Harvey began teaching heavy equipment operators and helped build the Saylorville Dam. After retirement, he enjoyed attending his grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s events.
He had a lifelong passion for woodworking. Harvey built the chancel furniture at Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he was a charter member. He also had made hundreds of “peace crosses” for his church to be given as visitor’s gifts.
Harvey is survived by his loving wife, Ruby; children, Randy (Lorraine) Hansen, Brad (Cheryl) Hansen, Jeff Hansen and Lesa (Mike) Moehle; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and one on the way; three sisters; six brothers; and a host of extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and a brother.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 26, 2014 at Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 5615 SW 14th Street. The family will greet visitors one hour prior to the service at the church. He will be laid to rest with honors at 2 p.m. at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter, Iowa.
