Charles was born on March 8, 1926 to Harris and Ruth (Williams) Thomas. He departed this life and joined our Lord on April 17, 2015.

Charles lived in the Mitchellville area his entire life. He joined the US Army in 1946 during World War II and was called again to active duty for the Korean War. Charles married Mary Ellen Faulkes on December 26, 1953. They had 5 children. He farmed, worked for Dennison & Partridge Lumber and Kent Feeds in Altoona, retiring in 1989.

Charles was an active member of American Legion Oldfield Post #155 for over 60 years. He loved to travel, read and learn anything about history. He enjoyed watching his grandkids play sports, especially baseball. His great-grandchildren lovingly called him “Grandpa Charlie”.

Charles was preceded in death by his son, Joseph Thomas; parents; his brothers, Harry and John Thomas; and sisters, Shirley Gooden, Stella English and Norma Hodge.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary; daughters, Barb McCurnin, Sandy (Joseph) Ortiz and Debra Thomas (Ross); son, Scott; 9 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Donald (Virginia) Thomas; and sister, Hazel VanEckeren. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends, including special friends, Phil Perry and Lynn Weber.

Services will be held at 10 am on Saturday, April 25, 2015 at Mitchellville United Methodist Church, 200 2nd St. NW, Mitchellville with visitation from 6 – 8 pm on Friday, April 24, 2015 at Hamilton’s Mitchellville Funeral Home, 303 Center Avenue South, Mitchellville. Burial will follow services at Mitchellville Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Legion Oldfied Post #155, Mitchellville Fire and Rescue or the Mitchellville Library.
