Katherine Burrage was born March 1, 1939 in Ottumwa, Iowa to Oscar Eugene Johnson, Sr. and Erna Mae Green. She was the third child of eleven.
Katherine was educated in Ottumwa and the Des Moines Public School systems where she attended Amos Junior High School.
During her early years Katherine earned the nick name from her father of ‘Kat’. Katherine declared her faith in Jesus Christ at Mt Olive Baptist Church in Des Moines, Iowa where she was baptized under the leadership of Pastor H. I. Fields.
