John Frederick Heinzerling, Jr. was born on February 23, 1932 in Charles City, Iowa to John and Rosa (Frank) Heinzerling. He passed away Friday, June 26, 2015 at the age of 83.

John began his forth-five year teaching career in Tama, Davenport and then went on to Des Moines Roosevelt. He spent two years in the Army, most of his time was spent in Germany as an interpreter for a U.S. General. He returned to Des Moines where he taught German, Spanish, and Special Education at Ames Hiatt, Hoover, and Scavo schools.

John enjoyed traveling, music, and collecting clocks. He was a member of Capital Hill Lutheran Church, Phi Delta Kappa, and Acacia Fraternity.

John is survived by his brother, Rollin (Carol) Heinzerling; nephews, Tim (Kathy) Barr, Robert Daggett, John (Crystal) Heinzerling; nieces, Tracy (Kerry) Barr, Rosa (Paul) Gunderson, Susan (Tim) Kane; and numerous great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Rosalie Daggett.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., followed immediately by funeral services at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 1, 2015 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Burial will take place at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City, Iowa, on Thursday July 2, 2015 at 11:00 a.m.
