Gary Gammel

Gary Gammel, 85, passed away Wednesday, July 29, 2015. He was born February 28, 1930 in Des Moines, Iowa.

He married the love of his life, Cleva, on September 4, 1954. Gary proudly enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Alaska. He worked for the Post Office for 31 years and retired in 1985. Gary raised show pigeons and traveled extensively all over the U.S. with them, winning several champion awards. He was an avid reader, enjoyed taking trips to Vegas every year, playing golf and watching pro football, especially the Colts.

He was a Deacon at his church for many years and helped produce the newsletters. Gary loved working Bingo games for the Legion Post #0659 of which he was a member for 29 years.

He is survived by his loving wife, Cleva; daughter, Genie; and son, Bill (Mary).

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Genevieve and Don.

Celebration of Life will be held Thursday, August 6, 2015 at First Presbyterian Church, 3100 Easton Blvd. in Des Moines. Family will begin greeting friends at 9:30 a.m. with funeral service to start at 10:15 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Winterset Care Center North and/or Unity-Point Hospice in loving memory of Gary.
