Service Details

Robert (Bob) Dwight Slack II was born on April 4, 1959 in Des Moines, Iowa to Robert and Dorothy (Dottie) Slack. He passed away on August 21, 2015 of natural causes.

Bob graduated from Hoover High School in 1977 and attended Drake University and Upper Iowa University.

In 1982, Bob married Therese (Heying) Slack in West Union, Iowa. To this union one son, Robert D. Slack III, was born. The couple later divorced. While living in West Union, Bob was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. In 1992, he served as their Grand Knight and received the Knight of the Year Award. Bob was employed at various jobs over the years, but the one of which he was most proud was Slacker Productions, a professional broadcast video production company based in West Union. Bob had a great talent for film production and editing along with his “radio quality” voice. Bob produced videos for Featherlite Trailers, Vesterheim Museum, State of Iowa Historical Society, Cedar Rapids Kernels, and the American Legion Foundation, among other companies.

Bob was active for many years in the Iowa Motion Picture Association, being a longtime member and serving on the board of directors for several years. In 1995, he held the office of secretary. From 1995 to 1996, he served on the Iowa Film Awards Board and he served on the Minnesota Riverland Technical Advisory Board from 1993 to 1996.

Bob’s favorite pastimes were fishing, golf, and traveling. Over the years he traveled to Canada for several fly-out fishing trips with family and friends. In 1986, he received the Mepps Distinguished Angler Award for a 13 pound northern pike. In 1988 he received the Manitoba Master Angler Certificate Catch-and-Release Award for a 9.84 pound northern pike. He also enjoyed traveling all over the United States, a favorite destination being Florida’s Disney World.

After leaving West Union, Bob lived in Indiana, Nebraska, and South Dakota. After returning to Iowa, Bob lived on the east side of Des Moines. He was actively involved in Celebrate Recovery and became a member of Lifehouse Community Church.

Bob will always be remembered for his quick wit, his sense of humor, outgoing personality, and love for family and friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Robert D. Slack and Dorothy (McCullough) Slack. He is survived by his son, Robert D. Slack III of Decorah, Iowa; sisters, Joanne (Roger) Winslow of Winterset, Iowa and Gloria (David) Paas of Angola, Indiana; nieces, Erica (Brian) Swanson-Smith, Dana Swanson, and Katie (Tina) Lasette; and nephew, Tom Stark.

A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 3, 2015 at Lifehouse Community Church, 3201 99th St., Urbandale. Memorial contributions may be directed to the church.
