Barbara Peters

Barbara Ilene Peters, 92, was born December 15, 1922, in the pink bedroom at her grandparent’s home in Booneville, Iowa, daughter of Walter and Vivian Wesslund. She passed away peacefully Tuesday, September 1, 2015, at Kennybrook Village in Grimes.

Barbara spent her childhood in Booneville and graduated from Van Meter High School in 1940. During her high school years, she worked as a nanny for several families in Des Moines.

On July 12, 1942, she married Marion “Pete” Peters in Long Beach, CA and they celebrated almost 70 years together. They had four children: Nancy, Charlotte, Diana, and Mike. In 1949 they moved to Des Moines where she was the perfect homemaker taking care of her family. After her family was raised, she worked for Home Health Care and sold Avon products for many years. A favorite hobby was bowling.

Barbara was the family caregiver for her grandmother, parents, and 2 aunts. It came naturally for her as she gave to many charities and those in need through the years. She belonged to the Shrine Auxiliary and Eastern Star.

Barbara enjoyed family and friends, traveling, fishing, picnics, and spending time at their lake home. Also, she was a collector of many things, but her favorite was walking the numerous beaches picking up shells!

Barbara was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She will always be remembered for her caring ways to those around her.

Barbara is survived by her daughters, Nancy Brown, Charlotte Komlose, and Diana (Steve) Niccum; son, Michael (Cheryl) Peters; 10 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and 28 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marion Peters, her parents; 2 sisters, Shirley and Marjorie; a grandson, Dennis Allen Brown; and a great-great granddaughter, Trinity Billings.

A celebration of life will be 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, September 23, 2015, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines.
