Ed was born in Wiota, IA on November 27, 1927, the fifth of seven children to John and Grayce Oneta (Reed) Grodt. Always a gentleman, Ed will be remembered for his quiet internal strength and his dry sense of humor.

During his early formative years, Ed lived in Polk City before moving to Des Moines in his teens where he graduated from North High School in 1945. Following graduation he joined the U.S. Navy and was assigned to the Construction Battalion (SeaBees). He served during World War II in the South Pacific Theater, Manus Island in the Admiralty Islands.

Following discharge from the Navy, Ed furthered his education at Grandview College for two years, then transferred to Drake University where he graduated with a degree in Business Administration in 1950. He worked for Dial Finance (now Wells Fargo) for two years and then began a 35-year long and successful career with General Motors in Omaha, NE. He was later transferred to Jackson, MS, Birmingham, AL, Manhattan and Brooklyn, NY. Following retirement he and his wife, Ruth returned to the Des Moines area.

While living in Omaha, NE, he and Ruth adopted their two dear children, Amy Carolyn and 3 years later, Thomas Paul. Ed had many interests including fishing, hunting, golf, Scouting, travel, reading, and gardening. For many years he enjoyed attending symphony concerts, DMMO presentations at Simpson College, and cheering for the Drake Women’s Basketball Team. Go bulldogs! He was also a former member of the American Legion (Post Commander) and Lions Club, both in Oradell, NJ.

Ed is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ruth; children, Amy Deming of Des Moines and Thomas (Bonnie) Grodt of Londonderry, NH; grandchildren, Andrea O’Berry, Holly and Lilly Grodt; step-grandchildren, Robin and Evan Respaut; great-grandson, Adacus O’Berry; brother, Gaylon Grodt; and sisters-in-law, Marjorie and Janette Grodt.
