Service Details

Ruby Ruth (Stanley) Hodge, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister, passed at the Fleur Heights Care Center in Des Moines on November 20, 2015 and joined the angels in heaven.

Ruby was born October 6, 1922 to George and Myrtle (Hall) Stanley in Dallas County, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Harley Hodge on October 7, 1940 and they made their home in rural Greenfield, Iowa.

Following the birth of daughters Shirley, Joyce and Karen Kay, they moved to the southside of Des Moines where Connie was born. Together with Harley, she raised her family and lived in Des Moines the remainder of her life.

Ruby was a longtime member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. She worked many years as an award winning employee for the Des Moines Hyatt House until she retired in 1983.

Ruby’s family and home were most important to her. She excelled as a wife, mother and homemaker. She was a wonderful cook and shared many holiday meals with her family and her Christmas baking with friends and neighbors. She enjoyed country music, gardening and growing flowers. People often stopped to admire her beautiful rose garden.

Ruby was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harley; daughter, Karen Kay; and sisters and brothers, infant Mary, Opal Brink, Marjorie Speedling, Louise Kading, Esther Lister, Gerald Stanley and Gene Stanley.

She will be missed by her children, Shirley (Dan) Reyes, Joyce (Gary) Roach and Connie (Byron) Shanahan; as well as six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; sister, Mildred LeMar; sister-in-law, Kay Stanley; and many nieces and nephews.

Her spirit is present with the Lord and we look forward to a loving reunion with her someday.

The family would like to thank the staff at Fleur Heights Care Center and Mercy Hospice for their support during this difficult time.

Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. Tuesday, November 24, 2015 at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 3820 SW 9th Street followed by burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Memorial contributions may be directed to her church or Mercy Hospice.
