Curtis William Calaway, was born January 17, 1952 to Nathaniel and Wyona Calaway in Des Moines, Iowa. Curtis crossed over into eternity on Thursday, November 26, 2015 at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City, Iowa. Curtis received Christ as his Lord and Savior at the age of 55 on Mother’s Day in 2007. Curtis was educated in the Des Moines Public School District and graduated from East High in 1970. Curtis is the father of seven children, four with Harriette Calaway, and three with Eileen Loper.

Curtis was not only a great mechanic, but he was an experienced handyman. Curtis loved spending time with his family and friends. Curtis was well liked and was fun to be around. He had a kind heart and was well respected. Curtis was a big man in a small frame. He lived in Des Moines, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana, and was living in Clear Lake, Iowa at the time of his death.

Curtis was employed at the Downtowner Detailing and Car Wash in St. Paul, Minnesota, the Lockhart Cadillac and Car Lot in Indianapolis, Indiana, and was the manager of maintenance at the Pilot Travel Center in Clear Lake, Iowa until his death. Curtis was the also the Vice Grand of the IOOF Lodge in Clear Lake.

Left to cherish his memories are his three sons, Damon (Sarah) of Des Moines, IA, Adam Froiland of Manly, IA, and Cassii (Tiffany) Calaway; four daughters, Kayona Calaway of Des Moines, IA, Monique Calaway of Clear Lake, IA, and Curtresa Calaway of Indianapolis, IN; step-son, Darnell Ratcliff; girlfriend, Marge Wessels of Clear Lake, IA; three brothers, Norman Calaway of Ramsey, MN and Jerry Calaway of Minneapolis, MN, David Calaway of Las Vegas, NV; four sisters, Clara (Bob) Sayles, Anita Jones, Wanda (Ricky) Terrell, Sherry Calaway, all of Des Moines, IA, and Doris Calaway, Aurora, CO; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Curtis was preceded in death by his parents, Nathaniel and Wyona Calaway; his brother, Martinis James Calaway; and his sisters, Eileen Raye Jackson and Lenora Jean Rife; his grandparents; and his grandson, Jayden Calaway.

A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 5, at True Bible Baptist Church, 4101 Amherst Street, Des Moines. Family will greet family and friends one hour prior to services.
