Elsie Burns

Elsie Ann Burns, age 71 of Des Moines, Iowa passed away peacefully Friday evening on April 29, 2016 at home with her devoted husband, Dick by her side. Funeral services will be private. To honor Elsie, a celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Elsie married Richard “Dick” James Burns on June 9, 1962 in Dubuque, Iowa, where they raised their four children. Her passion for family-time and enjoying the outdoors had them spending most weekends camping, boating, fishing and skiing on the Mississippi River. A beautiful voice, many may recall the comradery established and friendships gained while she accompanied Dick singing around the campfire. She will be remembered for her playful and competitive spirit.

While later in life, her passion for the outdoors was channeled into less active endeavors like planting and tending to her flowers, her passionate commitment to her family never waned. Her heartfelt devotion to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchild was evident to anyone who met Elsie. We have been blessed to know and learn from this amazingly strong and beautiful woman.

Elsie is survived by her loving husband Dick Burns; her four children, Tina Howell (Chuck), Rich Burns (Tina), Tonja Hilgenberg and Tracy Saxton (Kevin); her grandchildren, Rick Burns, Ryan Hilgenberg (fiancé Lisa Marie), Dylan Steil and Joshua Hilgenberg; and great-grandson, Cooper Hilgenberg.

Her four siblings, Betty Donahue (Joe), Chuck Arthofer (Joyce), Jim Arthofer (Judy) and Mike Arthofer (Maize).

Elsie was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Rosie Greenwood; and her brother, Boniface “Bunny” Arthofer.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the family for her great-grandson, Cooper’s education fund.
