Charles William Chastain, 79, passed away at his home Monday, May 2, 2016. He was a retired Des Moines firefighter.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, May 5, 2016 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 6, 2016 at Carlisle Christian Church, 305 Market Street, Carlisle.
Charles is survived by his wife, Sylvia Berenice; children, Cheryl, Rhiannon, and Justin; and grandchildren, Clare and Gabe Hall. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles B. Chastain and Dorothy (Dutton).
Memorial contributions may be directed to Carlisle Christian Church.

Some of my fondest memories of childhood were from the family parties that Charlie attended. I loved to sit in the room with the adults and listen to the lively conversations. Charlie's kindness and great humor drew me to him (not to mention he was pretty good looking too)! I always felt safe when he was around, which speaks to his strength, confidence and stability. A great family man, father, husband and a friend to all, he was loved by many and will be deeply missed. Love and prayers to all of you. Cheryl <3

Dear Chastain family, We were so sorry to learn of your loss this morning. We have lots of fond memories of your family when Doug and Justin were in church and school activities together. I so enjoyed our visits when Justin was my piano student. Our love and sympathy to your family. You will continue in our prayers.

I met Chuck 50+ years ago when he was serving in the Air National Guard. I am so sorry for your loss and my prayers go to you and your family. Through my tears I remember a handsome and fine young man--rest in peace my friend.
