Gail Levon Fitch
Ankeny
Gail Levon Fitch was born June 13, 1933 in Leon, Iowa. He honorably served in the U.S. Army and lived his life by their ethical code. He was a resourceful person and an entrepreneur. He did many things during his working life, including working as a self-employed painter and forklift operator, but primarily he was a “junk dealer.” He could make a profit off of what other people considered junk by fixing up and reselling treasures. Gail was an avid and unique pool player, perfecting a one-handed shot that earned him the nickname “The One-Armed Bandit.” He was a warm and outgoing person who could make friends easily and will be missed by those who knew him.
Gail passed away peacefully Monday, June 27, 2016 at Sunny View Care Center in Ankeny. He is survived by his son, Joseph Fitch; his granddaughters, Melanie Fitch and Heather Perry; brother, Leo Fitch; half-sisters, Donna McCullough and Judy McCullough; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and other extended family.
He was preceded in death by his siblings, Fremont “Shorty” Fitch, Veltia Pullen, Evelyn Ogden, Bill Fitch, Joe Fitch, and Junior Fitch.
Funeral service with military honors will be held at Lutheran Church of Hope, 925 Jordan Creek Parkway, West Des Moines at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 6, 2016. Gail will be laid to rest at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter following the funeral.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to the family.
