Mary Sumner

Mary Alice Sumner of Garland, Texas, passed away on June 28, 2016, at the age of 80. Mary was born in Des Moines, Iowa, on June 17, 1936 to Ralph Donald Stevens and Blanche Isola King. She attended Des Moines North High School.
Mary was married to Fred Sumner on May 1, 1982, and they were happily married for 34 years. She worked as an executive secretary for Rockwell and Alcatel and retired in 1993. She enjoyed cooking, doing laundry, ironing and tending to her flower gardens. After retirement, she and Fred loved playing golf with friends, going to flea markets and antique shops, and traveling to visit friends and family. Mary was an active member of the Concordia Lutheran Church, she sang in the choir for over 30 years and was a long-time participant in the Life group.
Mary is survived by her husband, Fred Sumner of Garland, Texas; her son, Robert (Debbie) Miller of Des Moines, Iowa; her daughter, Susan Miller of East Dallas, Texas; step-children, Roger (Julie) Sumner of Batavia, Illinois; Neal (Karen) Sumner of Dublin, Ohio; Wendy (Rick) Robinson of Granger, Iowa; and Scott (Jenny) Sumner of Ankeny, Iowa. She has 16 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Mary is preceded in death by her parents, Ralph Stevens and Blanche King, her sister Gloria McDonald, a great-grandson, Noah Tyler Card and a great-granddaughter, Colette Vaunell Wesson.
Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. on July 7, 2016, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue. The funeral will begin at 12:00 p.m. with burial at Highland Memory Gardens following the service. A lunch will be provided in the basement of the funeral home following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America in loving memory of Mary.

I never Mary knew personally, but I do know Fred. For all the time I was at Concordea, I heard only good things about Mary. I know she was loved by many and will be missed by all. I'm sorry for your loss.

Uncle Fred, Rob, and Susan, I am so very sorry for your loss. I know Aunt Mary is at peace, due to her faith in God, and His Son, Jesus Christ. It has been a lengthy journey for all of you, I know. May God hold you in the palm of His Hand, and Bless you all, J.A.M.
