Betty Nadine (Eittreim) Spurgin Lind
December 01, 2016
Betty Nadine (Eittreim) Spurgin Lind, the daughter of Ernest and Clara Eittreim, was born on July 9, 1925, in Grimes, Iowa. She died November 30, 2016 at Rosewood Manor in Estherville, Iowa. Betty was baptized on October 9, 1927 at the First Presbyterian Church in Grimes. She graduated from North High School in Des Moines in 1943.
After graduating high school Betty worked for Bell Telephone Company. She also worked for Traveler’s Insurance. On November 15, 1946 she was united in marriage to Bill Spurgin. They made their home in Des Moines, Iowa. Betty was a stay at home housewife and mother, supporting Bill as he ran the Hull Ave. Tavern, and raising her children. Lon was born in 1950, Donald in 1954, and Dave in 1956. Donald died in infancy.
Betty was a care-giver, first for her mother who died in 1943, then her mother-in-law and close friend, Frances. Frances died after a long illness in 1978. Bill died after a short illness on September 5, 1980.
Betty married Leonard “Cotton” Lind on June 15, 1984. Together, they worked, traveled, entertained and retired after selling the Hull Ave. Tavern in 1988. Cotton died suddenly in 1992.
In 1995 Betty moved to Estherville and was an original owner at Homestead Coop. She made the most of her years at Homestead, making new friends (including and especially Helen Love). She became a season ticket holder for the Okoboji Summer Theatre, hosted holiday family gatherings, and enjoyed the relaxed Homestead lifestyle.
Betty was a member of First Christian Church in Estherville, and was on the Board of Directors at Homestead Coop. She was physically fit and known for walking miles each day. Betty will be remembered forever for beef and noodles, apple pies, hamburgers and chocolate malts.
Left to cherish her memory are her sons Lon (Shelly) of Ft. Madison, Iowa and Dave (Jill) Spurgin of Estherville, Iowa. Grandchildren Matt, Megan (Darin), Mike (Maggie) and Andy. Great-grandchildren Aaron, Austin, Sydney, Calvin, Bowen, Jersie, Reid and Shelby.
Preceding her in death were her parents Ernie and Clara, father and mother-in-law Cash and Frances, brothers Bob, Gene and Beryle (in infancy), husband Bill, second husband Cotton, and infant son Donald.
Memorial services will be held 12:00 p.m., Friday, December 9, 2016, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines, with burial to follow at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to service time.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials be directed to Rosewood Manor, Estherville, Iowa or Avera Hospice, Estherville, Iowa.

Lon and Shelly,
So sorry to hear of your loss. Please know that even if we don't see each other from 8 to 4 every day, you are in my thoughts and prayers. Our good parents have left us memories which we will always have with us. God bless.

My father, Eddie Simon, was a lifelong friend of Cotton. He spoke highly of Betty and always said "they're a great couple." With sympathy to your family.
