Derek Nauman

Derek Nauman, 61, was born March 15, 1955, in Mason City, Iowa to Lester and Phyllis (DeWalle) Nauman. He passed away December 2, 2016, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.
Derek graduated from Rockford High School in 1973. He most recently worked as a carpenter for Prairie Meadows. In his spare time he enjoyed trains, fishing and metal detecting, but his greatest joy was his family. He was a loving husband, father, son, brother, grandfather and friend – and will be missed by so many.
Derek is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Eileen; daughters, Dawn (Jamie) Hinton and Amanda (Kyle) Critz; grandchildren, Madison, Tristian, and Lucas; father, Lester Nauman; siblings, Debbie (Claude) Nash, Douglas (Janice) Nauman, and Dennis (Carol) Nauman; and many loving in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends.
Those who have preceded him into heaven are his mother, Phyllis; mother and father –in-law, Francis Arthur and Mary Viola O’Connor, along with other loving extended family members.
A memorial service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 8, 2016, at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th Street SW. The family will greet friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family.

my wife found Derek at the Bondurant park metal detecting alone ,several summers ago brought him home to meet me as we shared a common hobby and the wife wanted to have us meet as I also am a detectorist , and we spent many times out searching and finding stuff together having some amazing finds of gold rings and silver and silver coins and regular everyday stuff , it was a fun time in my life and Derek made it all happen , teaching me how to find places to search , I miss him lots he left too soon prayers for the family my wife also sends condolences she is sad she couldn't come to pay respects

I worked with Derek at Prairie Meadows. We got to talking one day and he mentioned that he metal detected. This started our friendship and my love for the hobby. We hunted many times together the past year. My heart goes out to his family. He will forever be in your hearts.
