Mr. LaVerne "Ole" Olson

LaVerne “Ole” Olson, of Johnston, passed away peacefully at Mercy Hospice in Johnston on Saturday, December 3, 2016, at the age of 94. He was born on December 5, 1921 to Ole and Claria (Hanson) Olson in Kirkman, Iowa.
LaVerne was an Army Veteran of World War II, part of the Greatest Generation. He owned and operated O & T Olson Enterprises, retiring in 1985. Following retirement, LaVerne worked for various trucking and airfreight delivery companies and later worked as a Walmart greeter. He had many interests, he loved playing golf, cards, bowling, hunting and watching sports. He was a member of American Legion Post #374 and the Purple Hearts Society.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; sons, Tom (Kay) and Tim (Debbie); step-children, Gary (Carol) Woltz and Paula Douglas; step-daughter-in-law, Jenny Woltz; 17 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; brother, Allen; many nieces, nephews and other extended family and friends.
LaVerne was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Darlene (Griffith); daughter, Shari; granddaughter, Angelica; sisters, Helen and Katherine; step-son, Donnie; and his step-son-in-law, Larry Douglas.
Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. Thursday, December 8, 2016 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street in Des Moines. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. He will be laid to rest at a later date at Onawa Cemetery in Onawa, Iowa.
