Service Details

Glenn was born October 25, 1928, in State Center, Iowa, to Minnie Ruth (Pothast) and James Clinton Walkup.

He received an electrical engineering degree from Iowa State College in June, 1950 and held an Iowa professional engineering certification. He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps from 1951-52.

After his army service, he joined Iowa Power and Light Company in Des Moines as an engineer. While he served in many roles during 39 years of service, perhaps his favorite type of work was designing power distribution infrastructure. He retired in 1992, as a vice president, from then-named Midwest Resources, Inc.

He married Rosemary Hansford in 1954. Rosemary, originally from Missouri, taught third and fourth grade students in the Des Moines schools. The couple was blessed by children, James (Kerala, India), Elizabeth (Des Moines, Iowa), Ronald (Ellisville, Missouri) and grandson, Joshua (Colorado Springs, Colorado).

Glenn and Rosemary have been active parishioners of Windsor United Methodist Church for decades. Glenn served as a Scout leader in two Des Moines area troops. He enjoyed attending meetings of the Engineers Club of Des Moines and the Iowa Power retirees club.

When his church sponsored a refugee family to settle in Des Moines, he worked tirelessly to the help the family integrate into their new city and society. He was recognized by the Iowa Governor’s office for this service.

He loved his family, gardening, hunting and fishing. He is missed by family, friends, and colleagues.

Funeral services will be Friday, January 20, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at Windsor United Methodist Church, 6222 University Avenue in Des Moines, IA. Burial will be at Resthaven Cemetery.
