Donald Eugene Hay, 89, passed away January 18, 2017, at Bishop Drumm Care Center in Johnston, IA. He was born in Des Moines on August 12, 1927, to Melvin and Elsa Hay, and raised in Highland Park.

Donald was a proud veteran of the United States Army where he served in the Pacific theater during WWII. He was an amputee from a motorcycle accident but never let that slow him down. He successfully owned and operated DX Gas Station, was a dealer for Vogue and Cruise Air Motorhomes, was a used car lot owner, top Bolen’s Lawn and Garden tractor dealer for three consecutive years, and operated a tow-truck until his retirement. Donald was also a drag racer, hot rodder, and was known for his sense of humor.

Donald is survived by his sons, David Hay and Chris (Margo) Hay; 6 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Danny Hay and his ex-wife, Kaye Hay.

A service of remembrance will be held 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 4, 2017, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue, with visitation beginning at 9:00 a.m. A private interment will be held at Iowa Veterans Cemetery.
