Service Details

Carlos Granja, 51, passed away February 19, 2017, in Des Moines. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, on May 25, 1965, to Emilio and Flora Granja.

Carlos was a very hard working man, a loving husband and father. He was a doting grandfather to his 4 granddaughters and 1 grandson, whom he loved playing and spending time with as much as possible. He was an avid baker and loved making baked goods with his granddaughters and loved playing swords and play fighting with his grandson.

He and his wife Sylvia were married for 27 years and made a beautiful home in Des Moines in 1999. Carlos worked most of his life and was a very hands-on type of person. He loved going for walks at the park when the weather was beautiful.

With Carlos being from Chicago, he was an avid Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears fan, he wouldn't go anywhere without wearing one of his Cubs hats or a Bears jacket, no matter what the season. He loved being able to see the Cubs win the World Series and dreamed of watching them one day at Wrigley Field.

Carlos is survived by his wife of 27 years, Sylvia; daughters, Monica (Jeffrey) Elliott, Sylvia Granja, Elizabeth Granja, Ariana Granja, and Celina Granja; mother, Florentina Torres; grandchildren, Alyssa, Mia, Alexis, Amyah, and Carlos; siblings, Emilio Jr., Simon, Raymond, Carmelo, Jose, Josephine, Marina, and Elodia; as well as his father and mother-in-law, Adolph (Maria) Bryand. He was preceded in death by his father, Emilio.

Services will be held at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, February 26, 2017. Funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 27, 2017.
