Service Details

Ida Huston, 76, died Wednesday, February 22, 2017, after a lengthy illness, at Calvin Community in Des Moines, Iowa. Services will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1627 Grand Avenue, West Des Moines. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., with a 7:00 p.m. Rosary, Monday, February 27, 2017. Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 28, 2017. Private interment will take place at Resthaven Cemetery at a later date.

Ida was born August 12, 1940, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Joseph Patrick and Darleen (Davis) Simon. She is survived by her husband, Robert Barnes, daughter, Mary Huston, step-daughter, Brigit Barnes, grandchildren, Mary Schalinske and Asa Kalish, sisters, Sherry (Herb) Waddell, DuAne Fisher and Ramona (Ed) Brown, sisters-in-law, Linea Simon, Kitty Simon and Treva Simon, brother-in-law, Bill (Deb) Pratt, and numerous cherished nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Cindi Huston, parents, Joseph P. and Darleen Simon, sisters, Mary Jo Wright and Janiece Pratt, and brothers, Ernie Simon, Denny Simon, Joseph P. Simon II and Gary Staples.

Through the years, she advocated for the poor and elderly. She served on the Polk County Mental Health Board, the Altoona Planning and Zoning Commission, and she helped formulate state guidelines for long term health care facilities. She was the owner of Inspiration Bookstore for almost 20 years, known nationally for its unique concept of serving many denominations and religions. In retirement she founded the Quiet Place, a refuge for caregivers, and was the manager of Walt’s Hallmark.
