Terry O’Connor, 83, of Altoona, Iowa died Thursday, March 16, 2017 at Mitchellville Care Center. A funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. at SS. John & Paul Catholic Church in Altoona, Iowa. Burial will take place at Berwick Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home in Altoona, Iowa.
Terry was born September 11, 1933 in Des Moines and was the only child of Edward and Alice O’Connor. He was raised in Beaverdale and attended Holy Trinity, Dowling Catholic, and Drake University. Terry began working as a pharmacist with his dad at the family owned pharmacy, Grandview Pharmacy. He retired from Mercy Hospital after 25 years of service working primarily in the main pharmacy and then as manager of the outpatient pharmacy.
Terry married Roberta Anderson in 1957. He was totally devoted to her and the Mercy family knew them as TOC’n ROC. They raised three children in the Altoona area. Terry served Delaware Township as a trustee, volunteer fireman, Fire Chief and an EMTA. He was involved in Boy Scouts and participated in AKC dog shows with his Samoyed dogs. In later years he spent many hours working on the family genealogy. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and one of their favorite destinations was the Boothbay, Maine area. They always returned with fresh lobsters to host a family dinner. One notable trip was to Ireland where they researched the family roots and located the remains of Terry’s ancestral home. He also booked many bleacher hours watching his grandchildren participate in sporting and dance activities. He was an avid baseball and Cubs fan and proudly celebrated the Cubs’ World Series win.
Left to cherish his memory are sons, Kevin (Lori) O’Connor and Kelly O’Connor of Altoona and daughter Karen (John) Thompson of Milo, Iowa; four grandchildren, Kendra (Daniel) Hansen, Brian O’Connor, Nathan Thompson and Tylor (Kylea) Thompson; and one great grandchild, Oliver Thompson.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Roberta and parents, Edward and Alice
