Eugene M. Bakros

Eugene M. Bakros, 93, died Mar. 20, 2017, at Kavanagh House. Visitation will be 4:00-7:00 PM, Friday, Mar. 24, at Hamilton's Funeral Home, 605 Lyon. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM, Saturday, Mar. 25, at Capitol Hill Lutheran Church, 511 Des Moines St. Burial at Glendale Cemetery will follow.

Gene was born in Des Moines on Dec. 11, 1923, to Peter A. and A. Isabelle (Schafer) Bakros. He was educated in Des Moines schools, graduating from North High School in January 1942. During WWII, he served with the US Army Air Corps including duty as a B-24 navigator based in Italy with the 15th Air Force.

Following graduation from Iowa State College in March 1950, Gene was employed as a rate and valuation engineer by Iowa Power and Light Company. He held subsequent professional, supervisory, and management positions with Iowa Power and successor companies until retiring in December 1988 as vice president of Midwest Gas Company.

He was a longtime member of Capitol Hill Lutheran Church. Gene and Norma L. Hove were married on Nov. 21, 1959. He is survived by his wife of 57 years; two children, Lee Ann and Peter; Peter's wife, Beth; and three grandchildren, Isabel, Niko, and Victoria.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his honor to Capitol Hill Lutheran Church - organ fund and the Des Moines Community Playhouse.
