David Michael McDowell, age 63, passed away Tuesday, May 23, 2017 from Kidney Cancer. Mike was born March 23, 1954 in Des Moines to Sally & Doug McDowell.

A 1972 Roosevelt High School graduate, Mike was a life-long Cubs fan who enjoyed fishing, NASCAR, music and being around family & friends. Mike worked a wide variety of jobs including Cast & Crew Motion Picture Catering on the Universal Studio Backlot for shows such as Charles in Charge, Major Dad and for large events like The People’s Choice Awards and MTV Music Award Shows. His passion was found after returning to Des Moines where he bartended at Wellman’s Pub, Toads Tavern and was a chef at Drake University for 9 years.

Mike and his wife, Kate loved the adventure of traveling and lived in Washington, Los Angeles, Palm Springs, and Nashville before returning to Des Moines. Mike was extremely proud of his daughter, Jessica and son, Peter and reveled in every opportunity to see them.

Mike is survived by his wife, Kate; daughter, Jessica; son, Peter (Alissa); mother, Sally; brother, Matt (Rosanne); sisters, Dee Jay Keller, Julie Blake, and Carrie McDowell Hodge; and his blue eyed beauty, granddaughter, Devin; and nephews, JD, Evan, and Gabriel; and niece, Summer.

He was preceded in death by his father, Doug; and his grandparents.

There will be a Celebration of Life Gathering from 6 - 8 p.m., Monday, May 29, 2017 at Now or Later Restaurant, 3750 E. University.
