Mina Shelton

Mina Jane (Nelson) Shelton was born September 24, 1928, in Albia, Iowa, the daughter of Ole Clayton and May (Cliff) Nelson. She loved talking to people and easily made friends. She never met a stranger. Mina worked for Younkers for many years before she retired. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, sewing, knitting, and reading books, especially mysteries. Mina was a member of VFW, Grant Park Christian Church, CWF Group, and she volunteered her time with many organizations.

Mina passed away peacefully due to complications of Alzheimer’s on Monday, August 14, 2017, at Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown at the age of 88.

She is survived by her daughter, Irene (Dennis) Henderson; son, Danny (Ruth) Shelton; grandchildren, Cindy (Tom) Thomas, Dennis (Melissa) Henderson, Larry Shelton, and Laura (Larry) Dillon; great-grandchildren, Nick Shellenberg, Zach Henderson, Kaden Dillon, Madi Henderson, Emmy Thomas, and Danna Dillon; and other extended family and friends.

Mina was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Shelton; parents, Ole and May Nelson; son, Johnny Shelton; and her grandson, Benjamin Lee Shelton.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by funeral service at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, August 18, 2017, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Burial will take place at Laurel Hill Cemetery after the service.
