Gary Wayne Warrell, 71, passed away on August 15, 2017 at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa after a two month illness. Visitation will be at Hamilton's Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street in Des Moines, on Sunday, August 20, 2017 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. with the family present from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. He will be buried at the Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter, Iowa on Monday, August 21, 2017 at 9:30 a.m. with military honors.

Gary was born on April 16, 1946 to Howard and Othella Warrell in Des Moines, Iowa. He was a Lincoln High graduate. Soon after graduation he enlisted in the Marine Corps, and proudly served two tours in Vietnam. After his honorable discharge in 1968, he transferred to the Marine Corps Reserves where he served until 1970. His upbringing and Marine values shaped the way he lived his life. He was a man of great integrity who could always be counted on by his family and friends for honesty and loyalty. He will be remembered for always doing the right thing, even when it may not have been the easiest path for him.

He enjoyed golf, pool, Iowa Hawkeye football, Chicago Cubs baseball and most of all the Chicago Bears. His favorite times were holiday and celebration gatherings with his family.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Kimberly Veigulis (Michael) of Des Moines , Kerry Warrell of Norwalk and Jessica Warrell of Des Moines; his grandchildren, Zachary Veigulis (Kimmy), Dylan Veigulis, Tyler Whitehead, Joplyn Whitehead, Desiree Veigulis and Lauren Veigulis; his sisters, Marsha Clark (Rod) of Ankeny and Phyllis Warrell of Tulsa Oklahoma; and his dearest friend, Sharon Liston (mother of Kimberly and Kerry). He was preceded in death by his parents and Gina Warrell (mother of Jessica).

Memorial contributions may be directed to the family where they will designate a charity to make a donation in loving memory of Gary.
