Kelvin Leon “Rock²” Robinson, 60, passed away Wednesday, November 29, 2017.

Kelvin was born October 10, 1957 in Des Moines to Fred and Elnora Robinson. The family originates from the Blackfoot Tribe. He graduated from East High School where he played football as nose guard and was a wrestler. Kelvin was in Upper Bound at Simpson and Central Colleges. While at Simpson College he majored in child psychology, theater and speech. He attended Grand View College majoring in radio and television communications and DMACC where he studied to be a paralegal. Kelvin attended Iowa State University and eventually earned his Master’s degree at the University of Westminster in London England.

Kelvin worked for the Boys and Girls Club, was in Outward Bound in California and backpacking through The United Kingdom, staying in youth hostels. He was a camp counselor for the YMCA Day Camp, a lifeguard at the Camp Dodge swimming pool, a residential counselor at South Central Juvenile Care Center, a bus driver for MTA, a teacher’s associate for the Des Moines Public Schools, including working with E.D. and L.D. students at Lincoln High School. Kelvin also worked for Link Associates, (previously known as ARP), KRNT-KCCI 1-2-3 Dolph & Company and Air Talent Harry, he was a farmhand in the Philippines and Saint Petersburg Russia, he worked as a freelancer for Australia National Geography, a scriptwriter for Our Times cartoon, and he filmed Iowa State Fair events for Iowa Public Television. Kelvin owned Rock Productions in Des Moines. He retired in 1999 as station manager for KSCT-TV in Sitka, Alaska. While in Alaska, he became an honorary Tlingit.

He worked with the Bridge Project Program, was a Big Brother and the founder and Iowa director for VOCAL (Victim of Child Abuse Laws).

Kelvin was a good singer, he sang high tenor and won the State of Iowa Karaoke Contest. He also enjoyed helping with the church choir. Kelvin performed at the Des Moines Playhouse and the Ingersoll Dinner Theater.

He was the father of twins. Kelvin loved fishing and hunting and once rescued a toddler from a bear. He enjoyed cooking and loved catfish and salmon. Kelvin enjoyed scuba diving and underwater photography. He studied Kumdo and Taekwondo.

Those left to cherish his memory are his mother, Elnora; children, Joy, Isaac, Elnora, Chantelle, Kelvin Jr., Brandon, Chaz, Tyler, Jennelle’‚ and Jeffrey Donte’; special mention to Quin Ann, LaTia, Jayden, all of his children and the ones who saw him as dad all over the world; siblings, Keith, Steven, Mark and Mitch: as well as a host of extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Fred; sisters, Linda and Leasha Marlene; brother, Dell; daughter, Tabitha; son, Keifla Thomas; and his niece, Mikhaeya.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, December 3, 2017 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, December 4, 2017 at True Bible Baptist Church, 4101 Amherst Street followed by burial at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Orilla, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Iowa in loving memory of Kelvin.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dave & Marcia Pollock, Uncle Anthony, Aunt Minnie, Don, John, Hellina, Vickie, Elizabeth, Becky, Shelley, Dore’, Jenny, Heather, April and all who have been by his side including his dog Cody, an Alaskan Huskie who came back to Iowa in a Jeep Cherokee.
