Charles Walton Whitlatch, Sr

Charles W. Whitlatch, Sr., 92, passed away on Monday, December 25, 2017. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 3, 2018, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines, with Pastor Bob Connors officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Pleasant Hill.

Charlie was born in Attica, Iowa, on July 19, 1925, the son of Charles Martin and Clara Amanda Whitlatch. He graduated from Hamilton High School in 1942. He was a World War II Navy Veteran in service to his country from 1943 to 1945. On September 28, 1946, Charlie married Betty Somers. Charlie and Betty were happily married for over 58 years before Betty passed away on June 13th, 2005. Charlie was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He worked for Hubbell Realty as a maintenance man for 32 years, retiring in 1990. He enjoyed spending time with his family and was always there for them.

Charlie is survived by his sons, David, Cliff, Alan and Hugh Whitlatch; daughter, Kayla (Andy) Vaskis; daughter-in-law, Carolyn Whitlatch; brother, Tony (Norma); brother-in-law, Van (Judy) Somers; 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; son, Walt; and siblings, Amos, Russell, Ramona and Elaine.
