Charles William Bare, 98, died April 14, 2018. He was born February 11, 1920 in Detroit, Michigan to Earl and Ruth Hamacher Bare. He received his schooling in Detroit graduating from Denby High School at the age of 16. He graduated Cum Laude from Transylvania University, Lexington, Kentucky 1949, where he was chosen Mr. Pioneer of Transy 1949, Master of Divinity Degree with Distinction from Lexington Theological Seminary 1955, Doctor of Ministry degree from Lexington Theological Seminary 1974. Ordained a minister of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in 1953 he served churches in Kentucky, Illinois, Maryland, Iowa and Florida. He retired from active pastorate in 1982 to work in life, health and medical malpractice insurance sales and service for an additional fifteen years.

Mr. Bare served in the Armed Forces during World War II 1944-1946 with the 75th Infantry Division, 575th Signal Company in Europe and attended Shrivenham American Army University, Shrivenham, England while overseas.

In the past years he served on the Kentucky Human Rights Commission, had several state and national offices with Christian Churches (Disciples of Christ), Chaplain of Industrial Management Club, Owensboro, Kentucky, Board Member of YMCA, Chairman Protestant Committee on Scouting, Audubon Council board member, Green River Mental Health Association and Board Member Salvation Army Chapter, was made a Kentucky Colonel in 1964 by Governor Louis Nunn, Executive Board Member and Chaplain of the 75th Infantry Division Association, received award from the French Embassy in Coral Gables, Florida for service rendered in WWII. In 2013 received Legion of Honor medal from the Consulate General of France.

He was published in the Transylvania Publication, The Christian, The Christian Century, Green River Review, the Christian Century Pulpit, and wrote monthly columns for the Industrial Management Club Bulletin of the YMCA, wrote and published a book on theology and wrote a monthly Chaplain’s Corner in the 75th Division newspaper “The Bulgebuster.” During his career years, Chuck devoted time to radio announcing and playing the role of Santa many times.

A highlight in Chuck’s life was while living Miami, Florida for 28 years, he helped manage and played for the Young Viejos Senior softball team ending this career at age 88 when moving to Iowa. During these years he was a Historian and published yearly booklets on softball history for the Young Viejos.

Among Chuck’s interests were history and travel. He visited every state in the continental United States and 19 provinces in Mexico and most provinces in Canada. He and Barbara traveled to France, Germany, Greece, Austria, Switzerland, Monaco, Spain, Portugal, Morocco, England, Ireland, Scotland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Holland, Belgium, Italy, Sicily, Israel, Jordan, Bahamas and Puerto Rico.

Survivors include wife, Barbara; sons, Philip, Stephen (Jody) and Timothy; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 3 stepchildren, Randy Kesterson (Susan), Lori Sharp (Terry) and Kris Kesterson and their families; sister-in-law, Jan Spurgeon; nephews, nieces, cousins and many friends throughout the United States. Preceding him in death were his parents; his first wife, Mae Cornett Bare; his sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Fred Rouls; daughters-in-law, Gloria Bare and Jane Bare; and his niece, Laurie Brock.

Services to be held at Bethany Christian Church, 5901 Cadieux Road, Detroit, MI on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at 11 A.M. with visitation beginning at 10 A.M.

Memorials may be given to any Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
