Service Details

Ruth Vivian Shannon was granted her angel wings on June 10, 2018. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends that Ruth had touched in some small or big way throughout her very memorable life.

Ruth would like to let you know her work here is done. She received a call, an offer you can’t refuse for an appointment from which she will not be returning. This assignment comes with a huge sign-on bonus, a reunion with family and friends she has not seen in a long time. Her new mission takes her to a wonderful place where she will be socializing, gardening and reading to her heart’s content. Music, laughter and love are guaranteed. Food is delicious and you never gain an ounce. She is leaving instructions for her children and grandchildren to celebrate her mission here, which has now been completed. Low adherence to these instructions will not be tolerated.

Ruth was born on January 29, 1924, in Covington, Iowa to Earl and Viola Bottenfield High. She attended school in Palo, Iowa and graduated in 1942. She worked during WWII making radios for the military. She also worked at Quaker Oats in Cedar Rapids. Ruth married Clarence H. Shannon on December 8, 1945. After moving to Des Moines, she worked for the Polk County Auditor and Treasurer’s offices. In 1972, Clarence and Ruth opened their own business called Shannon’s Frame and Alignment.

Ruth was a very active lady. She belonged to the Delaware PTA, Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of American Colonists, Pioneer Sons and Daughters, and the Colonial Dames 17th Century. In a nutshell, she was a very active genealogist. She also ran the Babbitt News. Ruth loved to read, watch Family Feud on TV, and loved to travel the states with her sister Irene to research the family tree.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Shannon and granddaughter, Tiana Marie Johnson. Left to cherish her memories are their five children, Pat (Paulette) Shannon, Veleda Houska, Cindy (Bill) Johnson, Mike Shannon, and Judy (Billy) Enos; nine grandkids; 13 great-grandkids; and four great-great-grandkids.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 13, 2018, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave, Des Moines. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, June 14th, also at the funeral home, followed by burial at Rising Sun Cemetery in Pleasant Hill.
