Service Details

Robert “J.P. Crazy” Butz passed away August 10, 2018 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

There will be a memorial service held 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 18, 2018, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Visitation will take place an hour prior to services.

J.P. was born August 7, 1959 in Des Moines, Iowa to Marion and Delores (Brightwell) Butz. He graduated from Tech High School in 1977 and went on to receive an Associate Degree in Applied Science from DMACC. His career spanned from driving trucks, buses, and cabs to being a truck mechanic at Hawkeye Truck and a polisher/finisher at The Iron Works.

In his free time, J.P. enjoyed target shooting, hunting morel mushrooms, Demi Con, and was involved as a Quadrant Commander in the Klingon Assault Group (KAG). He was a member of the Des Moines Science Fiction Society and liked trips to the casino, conversing with people, and drinking Diet Pepsi. J.P. loved dogs, especially his Tasha and Tina.

He is survived by his siblings, Marcie Brightwell and Richard (Karen) Butz; his nephews, Brad “Edwin Dane” Fleener, Jonathan Butz, Jeremy Butz, Kevin Butz; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Craig Butz; and his grandparents.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the ASPCA in loving memory of J.P.

Sci-fi convention attire is welcome for the memorial service.
