Tom A. Simon

Thomas Alan Simon, 70, passed away Friday, August 10, 2018, at Edencrest at Beaverdale, after a battle with Alzheimer’s. He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Pat Simon; son, Eric (Heather) Simon and his children, Jalyn and Karsten Simon; step-son, Eric Reed and his daughter, Kayley Reed; step-son, Brian Reed and his daughter, Mackenzie Reed; and other extended family and countless friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Tom was born October 15, 1947, in Des Moines, Iowa to Rudy and Katie (VanGinkle) Simon. He was raised on the south side of Des Moines. He graduated from Lincoln High School, class of 1965, where he served as Class President and enjoyed his involvement in numerous sporting and extra-curricular activities. He continued to nurture and maintain the friendships he established in school his entire life. He went on to earn his Bachelor’s degree in business from Drake University. During his working years, he held various positions in the insurance industry around the Des Moines area. Tom was an avid sports fan. He began playing baseball when he was eight years old and continued through his time at Drake. He loved cheering on the Cubs, but would follow and cheer for most every team, especially college sports teams. He also enjoyed NASCAR, golf, and bowling. He was a classic car enthusiast, owning many throughout his lifetime.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m., followed by funeral services at 11 a.m., Thursday, August 16, 2018, at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Pkwy, West Des Moines. Cremation will follow the funeral. Tom will be laid to rest at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery at a later date.
