Joseph M. Haywood

Joseph Haywood, 75, passed away October 10, 2018. He was born April 21, 1943, in Des Moines, to Harold and Alberta Haywood.

Joe graduated from Tech High School and was a proud veteran of the United States Navy. He then began working for the U.S. Postal service and received his Electronic Technician Training from the University of Oklahoma. Joe was Postmaster in Mediapolis, IA and Wellsville, OH retiring after 25 years of faithful service. In retirement, Joe worked for Olan Mills Church Directory and was a real estate agent in Indianola, IA.

Joe was a member of the Lion’s Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, and growing his coin collection. Joe was also an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Cubs, and Pittsburgh Penguins.

Joe is survived by his wife of 44 ½ years, Roberta; children, Heath Haywood, Harold (Melody) Haywood, Curtis (Penny) Haywood, and Christopher (Joan) Haywood; 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Rick Haywood; sisters, Nancy DeConstanza and Teresa Haywood; as well as a host of other loving family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Sheila Gustafson.

A celebration of life gathering will be held from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 14, 2018, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines.
