Mary E. Nizzi

Mary E. Nizzi, 93, passed away at her home surrounded by her loving family on October 16, 2018. Per her wishes, a private family graveside service was held.

Mary was born October 30, 1924 in Des Moines to Joseph and Jennie Oliver. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1941. Mary worked for the State of Iowa as an executive secretary for many years. Her greatest joy in life was being a mother, grandmother, and caregiver to so many of her family and friends. Mary always had the coffee pot on in her big summer kitchen. Those who were lucky enough to know her loved her no nonsense . . . tell it like it is . . . can do attitude. She was a wonderful cook who sprinkled love in everything she made. In her youth, Mary enjoyed tending to her gardens, doing yard work, cooking, bargain hunting, and listening to country western and polka music.

Mary was married to her first husband, Art Nizzi on October 6, 1946. She was widowed as a young woman when Art was killed in a coal mining accident. They had one son, Art, Jr. She found love again with her second husband, Frank Nizzi. They were married on September 23, 1951.

Left to honor her memory are her children, Art (Patricia) Nizzi, Jr., Jerry (Diana) Nizzi, Joan (Don) Anderson, Jean Phillips; 10 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; sister, Beverly Boshart; and her brother, Milo (Marcela) Oliver.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Mary; husbands, Art and Frank; brother, Arthur Oliver; and a granddaughter, Adeline.
