Elizabeth “Bee Ann” Ann Heggen, 89, passed away peacefully after a long battle with dementia on Tuesday, October 23, 2018 at Trinity Center Luther Park in Des Moines, Iowa.

Bee Ann was born June 12, 1929 in Des Moines, Iowa to Clarence and Bernice (Gerlich) Mickelson. She graduated from East High School in 1947. Bee Ann attended Waldorf University and graduated in 1949 with an Associate’s degree in teaching. She taught kindergarten in Roland, Iowa. Bee Ann married Howard Heggen on August 6, 1950. Bee Ann was an active member of Central Lutheran Church and Capitol Hill Lutheran Church, where she was involved in many ladies’ groups. Family time was her favorite activity. She was a well-liked lunch lady at Hoover High School in Des Moines. Bee Ann will be remembered for her sweet nature, her fairness in her treatment of others, and how she was always willing to lend a helping hand.

She was preceded in death by her husband Howard, parents Clarence and Bernice Mickelson, her brother Walter, and her sister Lois. She is survived by her children, Sandra (Donald) Hladky of Red Oak and David (Bonnie) Heggen of Des Moines; seven grandchildren, Dawn (Mike) Twyford of Wahoo, NE, José (Jessica) Sturgeon of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Caleb (Emilia) Sturgeon Omaha, NE, Joshua (Reanna) Sturgeon of Rohnert Park, CA, Elijah (Bailey) Sturgeon of Fremont, NE, Jeremiah (Emily) Sturgeon of Fremont, NE, and Katie Heggen of Iowa City; 14 great-grandchildren, Melissa (Peter), Brandon (Kasey), Douglas (Jenna), Matthew, Audri, Isaiah, Isabelle, Rylah, Mateo, Emilio, Federico, and three foster great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., followed immediately by funeral service at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, November 1, 2018 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Burial will take place at Slater Municipal Cemetery in Slater, Iowa after the service.
