Service Details

Carol Wessel, 75, passed away peacefully on November 9, 2018 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. She was born in Des Moines at Broadlawns Hospital on September 7, 1943 to Russell Turner and Agnes Webb.

Carol worked various jobs throughout her life. She was a nurse aid at a Jewish nursing home in Colorado Springs. Later in life, she went to DMACC and received a certificate to become a Med Aid. That was a huge deal for Carol because she didn’t get to finish high school. Her last job was as a school cross guard on 2nd and Hull Ave before she retired.

Carol always talked about how much she loved her father-in-law and there was nothing she wouldn’t do for “that man.” She always said she was the outlaw of her family, but she loved each and every in-law with all her heart. Carol said, “Without my in-laws, I wouldn’t have the life I do.”

Carol loved bingo so much that it became very costly. Gene decided to buy Carol a computer to play bingo on. He felt this would control the spending. Carol loved it and eventually taught Gene how to play games as well.

Carol cherished her family. She would talk about all her adventures in life with them up until the day she was hospitalized.

Carol is survived by her husband Eugene Wessel; daughters Robin Wessel, Christine Ham, Diane Duckworth, and Ronda Van Conant; son Eugene Wessel Jr.; 8 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; sisters Shirley (Kenny) Dalton and Alberta Hull; 3 nephews and 2 nieces. She is preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be held November 12, 2018 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave. in Des Moines, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at the funeral home. Following the burial, there will be a luncheon at the Croatian Fraternal Slavic Center at 6575 Indianola Ave. in Des Moines. Memorial contributions may be directed to Carol’s family.
