Mary Theresa Gates

Mary Theresa Gates, 84, passed away November 10, 2018 at Bethany Life in Story City, Iowa. She was born January 27, 1934 in St. Paul, Minnesota to George and Mary Catherine Bruski.

Mary received her Bachelor’s degree in Nursing and worked as a surgical nurse at St. John’s Hospital. She married Chuck Gates in 1959 and the couple lived in various locations with Chuck’s military career. They moved to Des Moines in the 60’s where they raised their family. Chuck passed in 1978 and Mary became a single mother. She later returned to the workforce working for Des Moines Interviewing and retired from the Des Moines Public Schools Metro Kids Care at Park Avenue Elementary. Mary was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church and their Altar and Rosary Society, the Red Hat Society, and her card club. She also enjoyed crocheting, socializing, and most of all - time with her family.

Mary is survived by her daughters, Kathy (Tim Schofield) Gates and Pattie (Pat) Fraizer; brother, Richard Bruski; grandchildren, Chad, Andrea, Nathan, Maggie, Nick, Noah and Danny; great-grandchildren, Ava, Haylee, Brixton, Lettie, Jaydan and Jayce; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Chuck Gates; and her son, Michael Gates.

The family will greet friends on Thursday, November 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street with Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, November 16 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church, 5711 SW 9th Street. Mary will be laid to rest at Glendale Cemetery.
