Service Details

Beverly J. (Short) Heuton, 85, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother passed away in her home on December 6, 2018 surrounded by loved ones.

Bev was born on May 7, 1933 to Gaylord and Josephine Short in Carroll, IA. She graduated from Carroll High School in 1951 where she met her soul mate, Jack. They were married December 26, 1952. From this life-long union came five children; Diane, Allan, Dave, Karen, and Linda.

After high school, Bev earned her LPN from Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, IA while Jack served in the Navy. Upon returning to Iowa, while Jack was attending ISU, Bev was busy caring for their children and worked at Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames. Upon Jack’s graduation from ISU in 1961, the family moved to Des Moines where Bev worked the night shift in OB at Iowa Methodist Hospital which she dearly loved. She willingly sacrificed sleep to dote on her children during the day. During their years in Des Moines they were involved members of Zion Lutheran Church.

In 1972, the family moved to Storm Lake, IA where they remained until 1985. They were active members of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church and Cursillo making wonderful life-long friends.

In 1985, they moved to Sheridan, WY to the mountains they would forever love. Bev was a secretary at Trinity Lutheran Church. It was there they formed some of their closest friendships. They sang in the church choir and were a part of the same small group for 30 years. They moved to Altoona, IA in 2016 to be closer to family, however, Wyoming would never leave their hearts.

Bev was a self-sacrificing wife and mother who would always put others first. She was a devoted friend to many and had an embrace for every person she met. She was a woman of strong faith and a true prayer warrior. Family always joked there was ALWAYS a Heuton on the prayer chain. She loved to quilt and visit with friends over a hot cup of coffee. Their passion for camping led to many family memories at their favorite camping spots in the Big Horns.

She orchestrated a program to send cookies to service members overseas. She commanded a platoon of Pringles eaters to provide sufficient canisters to use in the delivering of the cookies. Among the recipients of these cookies were her serving grandsons Chad and Nick. Her patriotism was evident by the M.I.A. bracelet she wore faithfully in honor of a missing Viet Nam veteran. This bracelet was personally handed to President George H.W. Bush in Marshalltown which he acknowledged during his speech.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Jack; children Diane Ingleby of Altoona, IA; Allan (Sue) Heuton of Brookings, SD; Dave (Cindy) Heuton of Dexter, IA; Karen (Doug) Zimmerman of Altoona, IA; and Linda (Todd) Fritz of Sundance, WY; 13 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, December 10, 2018, at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th Street SW in Altoona, IA. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., with the family present one hour prior, on Tuesday, December 11, 2018, also at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Trinity Lutheran Church in Sheridan, WY in memory of Bev.
