Andrew Deering, Jr. age 94, passed away on Tuesday, February 12, 2019 in Des Moines, Iowa.

Andrew was born on April 15, 1924 in the coal mining town of Lovilia, Iowa to Handy Deering and Mamie (Simmons) Deering. Andrew worked many years in the construction industry before he began working for the Des Moines School District where he retired as a boiler engineer/custodian.

Andrew is survived by his wife, Earnestine Deering; sons, Joseph and David; daughters, Sheila and Diana; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews; a sister, Helen Hooper; and brother-in-law, Joseph Perkins. He was preceded in death by daughter, Anita; his parents and siblings: Howard, Loren, Ruby, Nimrod, Frank, Joy, Agnes, and Mary Frances.

Andrew loved family and close friends. He would engage in lively “kitchen table debates” with his brothers, most notably, Howard, Loren, Nimrod, and Frank at our family home. In addition, he loved to read, watch cowboy and western movies, and sing his version of the blues. He had various hobbies, from painting and sketching, to ceramics and clock repairing. He also loved the outdoors and engaged in hunting, fishing and swimming.

Services will be held at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines, Iowa on February 19, 2019. 12:00 – 1:00 pm Visitation, 1:00 – 2:00 pm Funeral Services, Interment Glendale Cemetery, Des Moines, Iowa.
