Edgar Grant Houghtaling "Mr. Ed" went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at Boone County Hospital. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 16, 2009 and a memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 17, 2009 at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway, West Des Moines, IA. A private family burial will be held at Lincoln Cemetery near Granger.
Edgar was born November 12, 1922 near Indianola, Iowa, to Gerald and Florence (Fisher) Houghtaling. Ed graduated from Indianola High School in 1940. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942 and worked as an airplane mechanic in Laredo, Texas, and the Quadulan Islands. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and lived in Texas and Arizona after his discharge. Ed moved back to Iowa and began to work at Lally’s Inc. as an auto mechanic in 1952 and worked there for many years. In 1962 he joined the Des Moines School District and worked for 22 years as custodian of Moulton Elementary School, where he was fondly known as “Mr. Ed”. After retiring in 1986, he worked part-time at Consolidated Supply Company for 8 years. He attended Cornerstone Community Church and enjoyed traveling, watching Indy and NASCAR car races, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Ed was previously married to Arlene Wells of Indianola, and Virginia (Sandstrom) Lundeen. In 1956, Edgar married Ruth Anne Snedden after a whirlwind courtship. Ed is survived by his wife Ruth Anne; children, Dennis, Richard Verbiski, Judi (Bill) Baker, Peggy (John) Denham, and Shirley; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Virginia.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Madrid Home ACTS Fund, Hospice of Central Iowa, or Cornerstone Community Church.
