Service Details

Colleen Rose Black, 88, passed away on May 21, 2019. She was born on February 26, 1931, in Des Moines to John and Rose Daniels.

Colleen was an accomplished roller-skating dancer during her high school years while attending Des Moines East High School. She married Richard (Dick) Lee Black on New Years Day in 1948 and they raised eight children together. Over the decades that followed, while Dick worked two jobs, and occasionally three, Colleen handled most of the daily activities for their fast growing family. She was a tireless cook, active seamstress, engaging supporter, part-time homework manager, fun-loving friend, and loving mother. In their early years on a small farm Colleen learned to harvest cherries, apples, peaches and pears, can vegetables, make butter, milk cows, raise chickens, pigs and sheep and grow voluminous vegetable gardens. As their eight children grew older and they moved to Norwalk, Iowa Colleen and Dick found a bit more time to become accomplished square-dance partners and high school sports enthusiasts. Colleen also became a needed dance partner for her teenage kids, a master gardener and flower 'whisperer' and she and Dick lead family road trip vacations to grandpa's lake cabin in Minnesota. Over all those years she was a loving wife and caring mother that cherished spending quality time with family, loved to laugh, play cards, be a great friend and who found tremendous joy in being with her kids, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Colleen is survived by her children, Steve (Dixie) of Lexington, SC, Bruce (Margaret) of Scottsdale, AZ, Kathy (Dick) Biederman of Des Moines, Denis (Peggy) of Loves Park, IL, John of Lexington, SC, Kirby (Christy) of Glen Carbon, IL, David (Jeannette) of Las Vegas, NV and Theresa (Tom) Hooks of Moline, IL; grandchildren, Tisha, Mandy, Dana, Tori, Austin, Brandon, Kayla, Rebecca, Chase, Ryan and Miranda; great-grandchildren, Sam, Maddy, Liv and Ben; and other loving family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard; and her two brothers, Jack and Donald Daniels.

The family will greet friends Wednesday, May 29, 2019 from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. with the Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church, 5711 SW 9th Street. Colleen will be laid to rest at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, 34024 Veterans Memorial Drive, Adel, IA.
