Patsy and family,
Nearly every time I walked into the courthouse, I was greeted by Cass: "Hey, Kathy, how are you doing?" On Tuesday afternoon we talked in the hall about his leaving to become a deputy. He was so excited. I told him how I'd miss him & that I hoped he'd be back as a witness once his training was done. His love for you was apparent every time he came into the courtroom where you were. He reminded me of a high school boy with a crush on you; he came to see you a lot! Both of you seemed to light up when the other was around.
I'm still at such a loss for words. I am praying for you to have the strength to get through these days, the comfort Cass would want for you, and the peace I hope you find in the days and years to come.
You know how close my house is to you - please call me if you'd like to go for a walk or for a cup of coffee, or just if you need anything. I promise I won't talk as much as I normally do. Your parking issue will be gone come Tuesday morning...
The world does not seem right without Cass around. The pain you (and all of us) feel is as strong as the love felt for Cass. I hope his love for you will give you the strength, the comfort, and the peace you need to continue on. He will always be terribly missed.

To the family and friends of Cass Nemmers, I offer my deepest condolences in the passing of your loved one. I don't know what to say to help ease the pain of your loss other than to share with you this poem that has helped me to find comfort in the past. I am praying for Cass, his family, and his friends and hope that through the pain and heartache you will always remember and cherish the memories, love, and laughter that will now be kept safely tucked away in your hearts. May God bless each of you.
Even in sadness,
you must feel pride
in the legacy left by
someone so special,
That spirit will
continue to shine,
lighting the way for others,
leaving all of us
an example to follow
and a remarkable life
to remember
with grateful hearts.

Patsy, my thoughts and prayers are with you during this tragedy. I will miss Cass alot. He always handed our bags to us, he always had a smile, joked around with everyone. He made sure I was supplied with boxes, also. I know there isn't anything I can do to ease the pain that this loss causes except to let you know that I am thinking about you and praying for you and your family.

Patsy, Ryan, Nathan and Hayley,
I can't imagine you grief. Your Courthouse family is grieving along with you. Life gives us plenty of things that make no sense and have no explanation and this is truly one of those things.
It was more than apparent the love and dedication Cass had for all of you and to the Polk County Sheriff.
May he rest in peace and may all of you find peace.
Patsy Lou, I am there for you, whenever you come back to work. Anything you need, just ask. Gaila

I was shocked to recieve the email that Cass had passed away. As I am not at school or in Des Moines because of personal reasons, I will take this method to express my deepest sympathy. I will add your families name to my daily prayers.

Dear Patsy and Family,
Along with my wife Paula, we would like to offer our sincere condolences with the passing of Cass. There is nothing easy about sudden unexpected death at an early age. In the short time that I have known you Patsy, this challenge will forever change you and your family, and I know you will be the rock that guides your family. It is never easy, I am not sure it was ever meant to be.
I lost my father-in-law and an extremely close friend at early ages both sudden and unexpected. I convinced myself God wanted to share places in heaven for good, honest, hard working, compassionate, exceptional people just like Cass. So, God called Cass home.
I expect to see you back in jail-court very soon. We need your glow and smile to help fill that room.
I am sorry I couldn't make personal contact with you at visitation. I had already made plans to be out of state over the long weekend.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this time.
May the peace of the Lord be with you at this time and forever.
Sincerely,
Jim and Paula Atkinson

Dear Angie,
I am so sorry for the loss of your brother! I don't think I ever had the chance to meet him. Although his life ended early, it does sound like he enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest. My prayers are with you and your entire family. I hope to be able to come to the wake.

There are no words to express the loss that we all feel at the Polk County Courthouse. Cass was one of a kind. His smile greeted us all in the morning and sent us home at the end of the day to "have a good night". He was so very special and that is why this is so hard to understand. Please know that my thoughts and prayes are with you all. I feel blessed to have known Cass and to have had him touch my life. May you find peace in the memory of his beautiful smile and the love he had for you all.
